Founded in 1975 by Betty Takeuchi, San Marino Toy and Book Shoppe has served generations of San Gabriel Valley families.

In 2021, toy store vet Christine Johnson became the owner. Shortly thereafter, we were joined by Mark Adam, our Book Manager. Mark has an MFA in Children's Literature and was previously with Mrs. Nelson's Book Fair and Scholastic. Lisa Nava, who spent time in the non-profit world with Christine as well as 9 years as the Children's Lead at Barnes and Noble, came on board as well.

Our book collection includes best sellers, new releases, local authors and illustrators, graphic novels and board books. The space is a blend of classic toys and games as well as on trend novelties and plush. We like to offer a range of prices and styles- here you'll find unique items, made in the USA, handmade, limited edition as well as some of the most popular best selling toy brands. For the most part however, we are a true specialty toy store, featuring lines you won't see in big box stores or online.

The store is 3400 square feet divided equally into book and toy departments.

We offer front and rear parking as well as handicap accessible entrances and restrooms.

Formerly Karen's Toys, and before that, Jeffrey's Toys, there has been a toy store in Encino Place mall, also known as Woodley Plaza, since the 1990s. This open air mall features a carousel, Coffee Bean, Gymboree, California Pizza Kitchen, and a wonderful baby boutique. This is a great place to spend a few hours! Our store is over 5000 square feet and features multiple play zones, with a Brio train table, Kullerbu and Little Friends. 

Clever Bear

In a beautiful old town setting, nestled by the San Gabriel mountains, Clever Bear opened in March 2023. With books, toys and gifts for all ages, this is a wonderful place to browse on a Friday night at the weekly Street Fair, or on a lazy Sunday morning after brunch.
